Under the projects menu you’ll find the first version of the Instant Chat app. in WPF, specially meant for use in small networks as an alternative for messenger i.e. communicator like applications, without the need to run any services for the data communication. I've tested this app. on networks behind a router with a (hard) firewall, port forwarding through a router isn't tested. So if your curious to find out the possibilities by my guest, and please send me your feedback with your experiences.
Unfortunately I'm not been able to reserve the time to make a user-manual, so I've devoted my first blog to this subject to offer some explanation about the usage. To download any of the projects, please register yourself, use the "registreer" menu at the top of this page. You can use the projects, solutions and binaries free, I'm only interested in who are using my sources and if it's being used at all.
Alright then something about the app itselff, the binaries (.dll's, .config en 1 exe) can be placed on "C:\Program Files\InstantChat" as location, so the icons can be found. Only prerequisite is the installation of the latest .NET framework 4.0 on your local machine. To make it easy for you, here's a button .
At startup you will first see the configuration window with some essential settings. First of all the IP address has to be replaced with the one of your current PC and is already available in the dropdown, look in your network settings for this or use a command window and use ipconfig. The remaining settings can be used at your own liking, just keep in mind to check your router if it doesn't block any specific ports. Click on continue and then you will see who's online, right click on a computer to delete it, do this with the localhost, at the bottom you can enter the name of a computer you want to connect to. If your router doesn't support DNS correctly, you can also enter the IP address of the computer separated with a comma. Click the add button and your done. You can instantly see if the computer is online. Right click on the added computer and start by using the displayed context menu clicking the Chat window. The Chat window contains an indicator that specifies whether the instant chat is active on the other computer and a button to add icons and to clear the chat screen.
In addition, you can, by right clicking on the upper screen, open a context menu to change a variety of settings, like the font, size and color of the text. Click in the bottom screen to enter text and send the message by hitting the enter key. Hope you’ve fun with it and I am of course open to improvements/bugs and enhancements. By the way, I hope you’ve noticed that when you change from English to Dutch everything changes even in the context menu inside the taskbar. This context menu also allows you to minimize windows, exit, and switch between windows.
